How My Process Works
Every student is different based on their academic journey, which means that how I support them will differ. That said, I generally take the following approach:
- Meet the Student Where They Are: Most of the first session is taking the time to hear from the student and probe on what is causing their issues. Some questions I will typically ask at this time:
- How do they learn best?
- How does the teacher typically teach the class?
- Do they feel entirely overwhelmed and don’t know where to start or is it understanding the details?
- What are their current study strategies?
- Introduce and Reinforce New Learning and Studying Strategies: Based on this initial understanding and the goal for the class, I’ll take time to introduce new strategies, materials, and study habits to help them in their class based on my experience of what has worked for students in the past and their own preferred way of learning. This is often where I try to break old habits and reinforce new ones that will serve the student in the long run, well after we’ve finished out time working together.
- Review Content Gaps Based on Current Material: This is where we spend most of the sessions.
- We apply the methods discussed in earlier sessions to what is being learned in class that week.
- These sessions are highly engaging where I will not just explain the material and answer questions, but often have the student “re-teach” the material back to me. My mantra is that if a student is able to effectively teach the material to someone else, then they truly understand it!
- Depending on the goals of the student and they class they are taking, I may also assign supplemental material in between sessions.
- Ensure Accountability of the Student: One of the most important benefits provided by regularly tutoring sessions is accountability of the student.
- Ensuring that they are coming to sessions prepared by doing the work in between sessions and classes is critical to making progress towards an “A” in the class, a 5 on the AP exam, or whatever the students goal is.
- Every session, I will work with them to make sure they keep an eye on the bigger picture and that they are putting in the work they need to meet their objective.
